Aromatherapy, a surface dive into why using this tool might be just what you need!

Aromatherapy is a form of alternative medicine, based on the relationship between the brain, the sense of smell, and the body. While not fully understood, humans have an inherent visceral reaction to smells, which is the basis of Aromatherapy. Essential Oils then, are natural oils derived through distillation from various botanicals believed to have healing properties, and having the characteristic fragrance of the plant or other source from which it is extracted.

My journey with Essential Oils has been both short and new. While I have long enjoyed the scents of clove oil or bergamot, (and especially this one neroli perfume the Body Shop carried years ago!) I hadn’t yet tapped into the benefits of Aromatherapy until taking a course recently.

My first excitement was discovering that specific scents are related to chakra healing. With some overlap, there are many essential oils connected to each chakra, for example, my love of neroli might have something to do with my life-long journey of opening the crown chakra. Bergamot is known to work with the solar plexus chakra, something I experience some difficulties with, but am drawn to — self-esteem and confidence being also connected with this chakra.

It can also work the other way around, ylang ylang being a scent I really don’t appreciate, which is connected to the sacral chakra — a place I’ve also experienced much difficulty over my life, needing a sacroiliac belt for a painful pelvis issue when I was younger — this being the chakra connected to feelings and sexual pleasure, something that connects with trauma for me.

Are there scents that attract you, and others that repel you? It might be worth looking into the ways they connect with your body. I’m not suggesting that if I work through that trauma I’ll suddenly love the smell of ylang ylang, but it certainly is an interesting happenstance for me.

Some common Essential Oils and their corresponding wellness benefits:

Chamomile is soothing, calming, and said to alleviate insomnia and restlessness, as well as helping with discomforts associated with menstruation. Frequently used in tea form.

Lavender, often used to assist in sleep, for it’s calming/destressing and anxiety/stress relief properties. Drops or sachets under the pillow at night can help.

Peppermint, used for digestive problems, such as IBS, can assist with headaches and muscle aches, used topically.

Tea Tree — has antiseptic, antifungal, antiviral, and antimicrobial properties, often used in bathing and maintaining personal cleanliness, or as a topical medicinal agent

As seen in the list above, essential oils can be used in different ways, from inhaling to washing your hair and more. Five of those ways:

1) Direct inhalation, through the nose smelling from the bottle or a cotton ball/cloth with some of the oil on it. You can use steam inhalation with hot water, or even place a few drops on your pillowcase, or other bed linen.

2) In the Bath or Shower, you can place a few drops into the hot water of a tub, or the base of your shower.

3) You can use a standard Aromatic Diffuser, following the instructions for the electronic device.

4) Direct Skin Contact — make sure to blend your essential oil with a carrier oil, such as coconut oil or grapeseed oil, and then apply it to your wrist, neck or other key spots on your body.

5) Natural Evaporation — if you place 10-15 drops in hot water, along with Epsom or sea salts, it will naturally assist in the diffusion process. Also, there are Terra Cotta bowls especially designed for diffusing essential oils.

*** And for certain herbs and spices that might be used as essential oils, you can make a tea with them, diluting them in the hot water, and drink them. But be certain your are using food-grade extract before you use this method. Or simply buy teas that already contain the ingredient you are looking for.
