They are strung on 19-strand beading wire, so you can be assured when you clip them onto your keyring, they are strong and up for the task!
Each strand consists of different sized beads, this is to encourage us to reflect on both the big and small aspects of our life. It is to allow the mind to recognize that it is not simply the most pressing matters in our lives that deserve our attention — sometimes it is the smallest piece that can contain the most pertinent information to unlocking our joy.
Mindfulness beads are crafted with a connecting loop at either end — the beaded end is simply a good place to hold on to when using this tool, as well as an easy place to hang them from (either on a hook, on a keyring or any other way you choose). The second end of the strand houses a durable wire guard. This is the perfect place to clip on a charm.
Charms are not required for the use of Mindfulness beads, but they do hold a purpose.
The definition of charm reads simply “the power or quality of giving delight or arousing admiration.” But charms have a long-standing history as being seen as objects believed to have healing or other quasi-magical properties. Often called a ‘talisman’ they are seen as a physical representation of a spell or incantation. Choosing an image that represents your intention or your desire or goal can help to focus your thinking.
For example, if your intention is to focus on increasing your dance skill, choosing a charm that represents this will help you begin and end your Mindfulness with dance. Although you may work through other activities with your beads, your energy will continue to flow into your original intention by the use of the dance charm.
Another example of a use for a charm is simply a happy thought – if you choose a little girl charm that makes you think of your daughter, this can help ground your joy in the present moment.
Yet another use is to help let go of old hurts. Perhaps you have recently lost a family pet, choosing a dog charm that makes you think of your animal and working through the Mindfulness activities can help release the pain you are carrying inside.
One of the charms I personally use says ‘survivor’ on it. I use this to help me work through my feelings about Domestic Violence and the role it has played in my life. Some of the activities I work through my beads include counting the ways in which my life has improved since I left the situation, or counting the things that I lost and letting them go.
The best part about the construction of Mindfulness beads is that the charms are interchangeable! You can work through with one charm, and when it no longer serves a purpose for you, you can remove it and add a new charm for a new intention.
As the Zen saying goes: The things we touch have no permanence…there is nothing we can hold onto in this world. Only by letting go can we truly possess what is real.
“Nothing is permanent in this wicked world, not even our troubles.”
Note: You may find conflicting information on the web that tells you charms, talisman, or sigil need to be “charged” with magic spells and incantations. Over the last two decades I have studied many varied religions and belief structures that span the globe; from this wide body of knowledge, it is my strongest idea that intentions are at the crux of it all. We are all beings of energy and light, and if we focus that energy on a specific intention, then that is where the magic truly happens. You do not need to be Wiccan or Hindu or Islamic or Christian to believe in the power of intention, you simply need to be able to think specific thoughts.
