Energy is all around us. Reiki teaches that energy is in all things, in all places, at all times. The 7 major chakras in our body are energy centres. They connect us with the subtle energy of the world around us. Each of these 7 chakras has its own unique way of transforming energy and is linked to certain parts of the body. Working with opening chakras is something you can do on your own through meditation, with a guide, or in a group.
I practice Reiki. I also like to do a chakra alignment when I provide a session to my clients. I’m a chatter, I talk about what I’m doing, what I can feel, share the words that I often feel compelled to say in regards to a particular chakra, and I also name the individual chakras, how they connect and what their I am statement/affirmation would be — such as the heart chakra is I am loved.
Well, I learned recently I’ve been doing that last part all wrong! Owning our mistakes is the first step in learning the right practice. I am as capable of mistakes as the next human.
I know that “I am” is the statement of the root chakra. It is our connection to our body, to the physical realm, to the earth. It is a statement of being. I know that the next chakra, the sacral, is a statement of “I feel”, but then I would also associate it with an I-am statement, such as “I am creative”. What I should have been doing was connecting it to it’s OWN statement — “I feel creativity in all that I do”. “I feel grounded”. “I feel connected”. “I feel pleasurable”.
Here are the 7 major chakras and their corresponding affirmation statements, with a few examples:
The root chakra is “I am”. Such as, I am safe. I am free. I am a deep thinker. I am in my body. I am a part of the stars. I am grounded. I am content. I am seeking abundance. I am a community builder. I am seeking physical connection.
The sacral chakra is “I feel”. Such as, I feel excitement. I feel confident. I feel deeply. I feel my emotions on the surface. I feel capable. I feel music in my bones. I feel sexy. I feel creative.
The solar plexus chakra is “I do.” Such as, I do what is right for me. I do many activities. I do crafts. I do public speaking. I do actively listen. I do hear the world around me. I do strength building.
The heart chakra is “I love”. Such as, I love myself right now. I love the people in my circle. I love my family. I love my cats. I love getting up early in the morning. I love making connections. I love community. I love completing tasks in a timely manner.
The throat chakra is “I speak”. Such as, I speak my truth. I speak with conviction. I speak proudly. I speak in order to be heard. I speak to animals. I speak with loving kindness. I speak using story to convey my thoughts. I speak expressively. I speak to encourage others.
The brow/third eye chakra is “I see”. Such as, I see all the world around me. I see connections in everything. I see my truth. I see in my dreams. I see potentials. I see progress. I see stories. I see the cosmos. I see kindness. I see others clearly. I see my path. I see my goals.
The crown chakra is “I understand”/”I know”. Such as, I understand myself. I understand connection. I understand truth. I understand you. I know loss. I understand my actions. I understand patience. I know compassion. I understand my need for alone time. I understand your boundaries. I understand suffering. I know joy.
When you work with the right language, you get the right results. The subtle energy connects with our subconscious mind. The subconscious only understands positive present-tense terms — saying “I don’t feel pain” is the same as saying “I feel pain”. The subconscious cannot see the difference and if you are trying to be pain-free, these words will not be your right affirmation. Something like “I feel abundance”. “I feel strength”. “I feel increased stamina”. These statements will bring you the positive renewal you are looking for, away from any pain you might be experiencing.
Even if meditation isn’t your thing, I invite you to spend some time focusing on the I-statements that feel truest to you. Look at them on the page/screen. Say them in your mind. Speak them out loud and hear them, write them down on paper/in a digital note, see them in your own words. The more we focus on those affirmations, the more we are able to manifest them in our life. If you are consistently focused on the fear and anxiety-driving thoughts, those will become your reality. If you can flip your script, instead focusing on the statements that align with your values and goals, you will be one step closer to actualizing them!
